Zirconia or acrylic: what the bridge material costs you
One line on a quote, the bridge material, can explain much of the difference between two prices. Here's what it means for your money.
Acrylic bridges usually cost less to make and are quicker and cheaper to repair, but wear and stain faster, so they may need repair or replacing sooner. Zirconia bridges usually cost more up front but resist wear and staining. Temporary teeth are almost always acrylic. Check which material the final bridge is, in writing.
The cost difference at a glance
| Acrylic on a metal frame | Zirconia | |
|---|---|---|
| Price up front | Lower | Higher |
| Wear and staining | Faster | Slower |
| Repairs | Usually quicker and cheaper | Harder to adjust or repair |
| Likely cost over the years | More frequent repairs or replacement | Fewer, but each can cost more |
This comparison reflects general dental practice and our own clinic's experience, rather than a single published source. Good research comparing the two over many years is still limited.
Why it matters more when you're treated abroad
A repair that's quick at a local practice can mean a flight if your bridge was made abroad. When you compare quotes, think about how often each material is likely to need attention, and who would do it. Your UK dentist can help with some repairs if they know the implant system, which is why the brand matters. See the lifetime cost.
What to check in the quote
- The material of the final bridge, not just the temporary one.
- Whether it sits on a metal framework, such as a titanium bar.
- Whether any porcelain is layered on top.
- What the guarantee covers for that material, and for how long.
For how each material looks and feels, see All-on-6 explained.
Common questions
Is zirconia always worth the extra?
Not always. It depends on your bite, your budget and how far you'll be from the clinic if a repair is needed. Ask why a material is recommended for you.
Are temporary teeth zirconia?
Almost never. Temporary teeth are usually acrylic, worn while the implants heal. The final bridge is fitted on the second trip.
Does your price include zirconia?
Yes. Our own All-on-6 price includes zirconia teeth on a titanium bar for the final bridge.
Can zirconia chip?
It's very hard, but no material is indestructible. Porcelain layered over zirconia for appearance can chip.
